Brisbane, 05 August, 2022 - Global Secure Layer, Australia’s leading IP Transit and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) company, today announced the signing of a significant wave commitment on the new Southern Cross NEXT (SX NEXT) Cable.

The SX NEXT Cable will operate between Sydney and Los Angeles, providing a high capacity express route with the lowest-latency path between the two cities. The cable has over 70Tbps of total capacity with just four fibre pairs between Sydney and Los Angeles, of which Global Secure Layer has taken a substantial commitment.

Chief Operations Officer for Global Secure Layer, Callum Hansford emphasised the importance of having secure, low-latency subsea capacity between the two countries and the impact this will have for local businesses given the ever evolving impact of DDoS threats coming into Australia.

“Building upon our already extensive global network, the decision to take a large wave commitment on the newly completed SX NEXT was the logical next step for us. From the beginning, Global Secure Layer has always been dedicated to latency and security. This additional wave capacity will strengthen Global Secure Layer’s subsea network infrastructure, bolstering our commitment to provide Australian businesses with secure, reliable and low-latency connectivity.”

“For companies like GSL that specialise in providing inline DDoS protection and have recently absorbed and mitigated attacks as large as 1.65Tb/s, the decision to take capacity on SX NEXT was a must. Over the last 6-12 months, we have seen a substantial rise in the number of DDoS attacks with Australian businesses as the end target,” said Hansford.

“As well as growing our backbone network we have continually been expanding our Points of Presence and are now accessible across 88 data centres internationally. This ensures our edge protection is as far reaching as possible, mitigating DDoS attacks at the source rather than the end destination.”
